Alkemy Wave 3 previews
Kraken Editions have sent along some previews of the miniatures that will be released this year as Wave 3 of releases for Alkemy.
Update: Kraken editions wanted us to mention that Tha’pioca and the
Knight Errant are still Limited Editions that won’t be available in stores.

So Tha’pioka and the Knight Errant aren’t LEs any more?
Very cool! Looking forward to getting these.
damn, the game looks better and better. Tamel’seh is really great, rest is ok too. i will be picking it up when full-english starters are released, especially since it’s one of the few games to have indian-styled army.

They never were limited editions, but from the file names they still are special editions. I don’t know whether they will be available through the ArteFactory online store or something.
I’m still not convinced by the Khalimans (huge feet and rather stiff poses), but I’m quite impressed by the rest of this wave.
I really like this game and the models! However, I’m sad that there’s cat-people…
Ok, Tha’pioca and the Knight Errant are indeed LEs. I’ve had this confirmed.
Also, all four are Alchemists of the Outer Circle.
These are really nice. I’m quite interested in picking this up once I can find an American distributor.
Thapioca and the other one should be available through their OP program, if I remember correctly ;-)
@shwtd, yes, thats correct, it will be available through the OP program. ftf. ;)
Does anyone know whether these will come with English cards or not, and/or when we might be getting English language starter sets?
I know 4 or 5 people at my club who would buy some if they didn’t have to faff about with downloads.
The english version of the rules should be in the boxes before this summer, as I recall.
@Quickworthy : You have lazy friends, they deserve to be French (large part of humour inside ;-))
@Uzo : FTF, that’s right !
The Knight Errant really stands out for me. Lovely tentacled seacreature hybrid.
Gaming these days makes me regret giving up French…
Lazy? Well, maybe; but with so many games to choose from it’s hard to convince people to play something that they can’t use off the shelf when there are 10 games they can. And it’s entirely understandable. And if they have to translate stuff why not play Helldorado or one of the other untranslated games? I believe there are several in German too, and there was an interesting Brazilian game I found last year (I kid you not). Everyone at my club has a busy life with work and family, so the more effort you put between them and getting to play a game in the limited time they have available for their hobby the less likely you will get them to ‘buy in’.
I don’t know how big the French and English speaking games markets are respectively, but would be amazed if the French language market was bigger in global terms. So as a business model it just seems silly not to launch in English at the same time, especially in such a competitive market. It’s building in a competitive disadvantage, which is just plain daft.
Not that I have anything against Kraken. This is posted purely out of frustration as I think their game looks really cool and I may well not get to play it now as they’re so slow at getting English language editions out.
I want to hear more about these German and Brazilian games. I’m far too sheltered.

The problem (that I hadn’t really realized, so you might not know about it either) is that you have to put a huge amount of money up front in order to release a miniature game. Much more than for a rgp, for example. Before investing further in translating all the material you created and printing it for a large market, it makes a lot of sense to start building a smaller community and capitalizing on what you have already. If the game does not take off for whatever reason that’ll be that much less money lost.
Now that said, there’s no Alkemy full size rulebook in French as of yet either, and its release in the wave 5 is announced as simultaneous in French and English. You need to remember the first Alkemy release was like 2 months ago… All the material that exists in French for this game is also available in English from their website. All of it. True you can’t use the game off the shelf right now if you don’t understand French, but it takes 15min tops to download everything, print the material and start playing. Besides, according to their TGN interview, the first waves should already come with cards in French and English, and the rules in the boxes will be in English as soon as they get a US distributor.
@mathieu:
I have the 4 starters. There are no English cards in the boxes. Everything inside the box is in French.
Excuse me. To ammend my last post, there is ONE bit of English in the box. On the outside of the bag the dice are packaged in it says the following in english:
WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 years.
MADE IN CHINA
So apparently French speaking parents are smarter than English speaking parents and don’t actually need a warning to not give small objects to their under 3 year old children. ;)
It was clearly intended as a joke so I don’t know that you need to get too upset. There was a pretty clear smilie in the post and he even mentioned that it was intended to be taken with some humour.
I think that they said that upcoming boxes will have the cards. There is probably still a fair bit of stock out there that is French only at them moment.

In the starters yes, but I believe they were talking about the booster waves in the interview. Eventually even the starters should be localized in English as soon as they find a distributor (which is probably depending on how the game succeeds in French first).
Has anyone tried how well the Khalimans line up with Bastis from the Wargods of Aegyptus range, are the legs the only major difference?
Perhaps I should have put a smilie in my post too Zac. I wasn’t upset, certainly not with the post about lazy mates. Probably just me being in a grumpy mood and needing to lighten up a tad. My bad.
Having said that, I understand about the costs of producing these things as I spent a long time working in the games industry myself. I take the point about starting in one territory and growing, just don’t agree that starting in a smaller territory makes the strongest business case. We can agree to differ :o)
More than enough companies go broke trying to build up too soon so perhaps
AsmodeeKraken Editions are just playing it safe?Could be Zac. So far, in my neck of the woods though, their playing it safe gains them zero sales. I just hope they sell brilliantly in France.
Kraken Editions is part of Asmodee?
Nope, just an honest mistake on Zac’s part I would think.
There are no English rules/cards in the current boxes. They are being worked on and likely part of the reason they are not readily available in the US as of yet.
I prefer to see Kraken make certain they are ready to provide product to the US with a timely and accurate release schedule instead of bringing starters in only to have major delays.
Just so everybody knows, the booster boxes that come out mid May (wave 2) will contain 3 minis each and the cards in French AND in English. The info has been given here by one of the guys of Galleon, the organized play section of Kraken. The boxes will retail for 16€.
