  • Origins Awards semifinalists announced

GAMA has announced the semifinalists for the 34TH annual Origins Awards.

The Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design (AAGAD) and the Game Manufacturers Association (GAMA) proudly announce the semi-finalists in all categories for the 34th Origins Awards.

“It was a good year for the Origins awards,” said Phil Lacefield Jr., chairman of the AAGAD. “We had plenty of contenders across the board. The jury members did a great job.”

“The Origins Awards give our industry a chance to reward excellence in all facets of gaming,” said Anthony Gallela, GAMA’s executive director. “The award categories recognize games of all types, as well as fiction, non-fiction, magazines, comics, and more.”

Juries of subject matter experts in each award category selected the semifinalists from all submitted products. They narrowed the field for their category to the top 10 selections (or fewer, depending on the number of total submissions).

Starting with the semifinalist list, game retailer attendees at this week’s GAMA Trade Show in Las Vegas will select up to five finalists in each award category. From those finalists, attendees at the Origins Game Fair and members of the Academy of Adventure Gaming Arts and Design will select the ultimate winners of the 34th Origins Awards.

This year’s winners will be announced during the Origins Awards ceremony at the Origins Game Fair in Columbus, Ohio, on Saturday, June 28, at 8:00 p.m.

Submissions for 35th Origins Awards will open soon. Watch www.originsgamefair.com/aagad/submission for updates and submission forms. The final submission deadline for the 35th Origins Awards is January 15, 2009. No extensions will be given past this date! It is perfectly acceptable to submit games as they are relea! sed throughout the year.

Best part about these awards (and nominations) is taking a look at stuff you’ve either never heard of or forgot it came out.

    Jeffhiatt says:

Just looking at the miniatures section (although a lot of this applies to other sections), these selections by AAGAD and GAMA go a long way to showing how out of touch these awards are with the industry.

I understand that these selections are based on what they received to consider. This is the way this has been for as long as I can remember. If GAMA wants this to be an industry award and to be something that is respected there needs to be some outreach here. Somebody with GAMA or AAGAD needs to talk to the manufactures and push them to submit.

I look at this list and all but one of the lines are familiar to me. But, I have to ask where is Corvus Belli, Games Workshop, Battlefront, Artizan, Black Scorpion, and Etc. You cannot tell me that any of these companies produced nothing that should be considered in a top ten list for this judging period.

    Bossravage says:

And by the way, why is Frontiers listed in the miniatures rules section ?

    Zac says:

I guess they figured it was more of a mini game than a board game. Its a bit of a hybrid product.

    evernevermore (John) says:

There isnt a category for hybrids? Isnt that a pretty common type of game anymore? Or do games like Descent and Doom and Space Hulk still get classified as board games?
