The thing that keeps attracting me to Rich's games is that you can play them on a 2 x 2 board. That's nice and makes switching from genre to genre easy. If I only have to store 2 x 2's, I can have a bunch of settings.

Thanks for the review.

It seems that pulp gaming is growing every day. I have found myself becoming more interested as well. This might be just the way to get my brother back into gaming, as her prefers a skirmish sized game with advancement possibilities for your characters and story driven battles.

"I wonder if a Wild West setting is next?"

From what I understand, Broadsword Adventures is next. Tempt you with some Conan action?

So for me an expanded “How to make Scenarios” section might be nice, or even a follow-on book for this sort of thing.
Your wish just may come true. Cold Wars was a big meeting for the Rattrap team and I let them know what I had planned. I think everyone will like it.

This was a great review, thanks for putting it together. I've been looking at Rattrap products for some time, and haven't yet bought any of the rulebooks. The types of games these rules lend themselves to seem to be a great hybrid of RPG and miniature battles. Plus, I don't have to buy/paint a huge amount of miniatures since I'm usually the one in the gaming group to pony up anything new. Up to this point I've been skeptical to dive into these types of rules, though, because I feel the game could just fall into a "chase encounter chips around the board" type game. So for me an expanded "How to make Scenarios" section might be nice, or even a follow-on book for this sort of thing.

I also really like the PDF distribution. Instant gratification, plus it's pretty easy for me to print only the sections I want. I should stop yapping here and just go order one of Rattrap's rulebooks...they are a great deal!

Ihmo the core Rattrap rules certainly are pretty flexible. It doesn't take much imagination to create interesting house rules for alternate themes if that's what interests you. And while they're in essence quite simple rules the addition of 'Hero Points' and some of the core mechanics give most every game a very cinematic feel.

Mind you Rattrap seem pretty determined to cover as many genres as possible! So far we have Pulp, Straight and Wierd World War, High Romance (Gloire) optionally with Pirates and now Sci-Fi Serial. I wonder if a Wild West setting is next?

It's worth mentioning that the rules don't have to be used just for pulp sci-fi. I've heard of players using them for Doctor Who and Star Trek type games. And Rattrap's games are all compatible so you could add whatever you want from other sets.

Also I think the game works best when there are more than two sides running around with the same or conflicting goals.
