Ask TGN: Wild West rules

John, aka metalminimadness asks:
What’s are the best Wild West or Weird West miniatures game (rules and miniatures could be separate) available?

IMO The Foundry makes the best Wild West minis out there, huge selection of great sculpts. White Wash city is great cheap terrain for Wild West games as well. We use home-brew rules so I can’t comment on the best commercial rules. |

I have heard lots of good things about the Warhammer Historicals Wild West rules, however, I have yet to purchase them and see, though I plan to in the future. |

Quite a lot of people play them here are there are several expansions for them as well. It is the only ruleset with which I am familiar at all. Regarding minis, there is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to that. Black Scorpion make a great range called Tombstone. Artizan have several very nice figures in their Wild West range and the Foundry figures are also nice. |

I reviewed the ‘Gutshot’ ruleset for TGN a while back and have to say I found them quite enjoyable to play, with a solid focus on ‘cinematic’ play rather than historical accuracy. |

The Great Rail Wars from Pinnacle is my favorite. |

I call “Legends of the Old West”. Certainly if you want an exciting game. |

I have the Legends of the Old West rules from GW (and all of the supplements) and think they are a great, fun approach to wild west gaming. I’ve heard good things about ‘Gutshot’ but never played it though. |

Wow, thanks for all the feedback, anyone using plastic minis for their wild west games? |

Here’s a thread over at World Works games where I pretty much asked the same question. Lots of info in there and SeattleGamer has the best post. |

@CCotD: Wow that is one helluva thread - it’s bursting with info and the SeattleGamer dude…woah he’s one man with the knowledge. Thanks for sharing. I can’t really add anything else about the topic other than check out CCotDs link. (Although we’ve got Legends of the Old West we’ve not played it yet, certainly great eye-candy - first read through the rules does suggest there’s a bit of a potentially broken power play possible with a Soiled Dove & Pugilist combo but that’s just a theory at the moment). |

Anyone played Helldorado? I think that qualifies for the weird wild west aspect I asked about. Figures look amazing and I think somebody translated the rules. |
