  • Introducing Skullcrafts

A new company selling basing materials, Skullcrafts, was recently brought to our attention and we asked the owner, James O’Brien, to introduce his company.

    From their announcement:

My name is James O’Brien, I am the creator/owner of Skullcrafts.com and have been in business since February of last year. I mainly offer basing kits through the website for those hobbyists who are interested. I have had many questions regarding what I use for products and while I can’t reveal everything about what I use, I will say that 95% of my basing kits are hand made from scratch. So in answer to any possible un-asked questions, I do not buy product and then repackage it as my own.

My kits are available through my webstore only, I do not run or operate out of a store. All kits are hand made at my home by me and my family. Truly a “ma and pa” type of business. I ship both domestically and internationally. My kits are extremely competetive as far as prices are concerned and not for reasons some may assume. I sell my kits just barely over what it costs me to make them (materials, packaging and time included) so I can get them to those that need them economically.

While Skullcrafts is certainly a business, I do not follow the guidelines of putting profit before quality or seek to “get rich quick”. I am more interested in helping hobbyists out than generating massive sales or gaining some kind of fame and/or recognition. When I started in this hobby (way back in the stone age), the things I offer in my kits were simply not available…my goal is to make them available for others, so they don’t have to spend gobs of money on tubs of materials they may/may not ever use.

Please don’t misunderstand, I am still running a business and I wouldn’t be “in business” for very long if I were to undercharge my customers. I plain just don’t beleive in over-inflated pricing like what seems to be the norm lately. I want happy customers who know they have been given a deal while they utilize the materials they’ve purchased. I know I have been on the receiving end of “hey man, I’ve been jipped!” types of feelings, so that’s why I offer so much variety in each kit. Not to mention that I use my own products exclusively, so I know the quality is there. Proof is in the pudding, so-to-speak.

The tutorials alone are worth a visit to the site. (Yea I know every one offers tutorials, but I like how these are layed out and presented.)

The tutorials have me really intrigued. I was very impressed by the medium tutorial, and I’d really like to see what he can do for the advanced.

I kind of suck at basing, and usually just carefully paint the base black so that there’s a painted figure kind of floating on display. It looks clean and nice, but I wouldn’t mind knowing how to do high quality basing. He needs to update his site a little more so that viewers know what he is offering. A lot of us have absolutely no idea what all the little things in his kits are, or do, and need the tutorials to make a buying decision.
